    Why Donate a Water Pump

Donating a water pump addresses one of the most urgent humanitarian needs in the developing world. Over 2 billion people lack consistent access to safe drinking water. Without a clean water source, families face dehydration, waterborne diseases such as cholera and dysentery, and children miss school because they spend hours each day collecting water from distant sources. A single hand water pump removes these barriers for up to 4 families at once.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked which form of charity carries the greatest reward. He replied that providing water is the best charity (Abu Dawud). For Muslim donors, a water pump donation fulfils this prophetic guidance whilst creating a lasting source of benefit that earns reward long after the initial gift.

How a Water Pump Donation Works

The water pump donation process at HNCO follows 5 steps from payment to installation.

    1

Select a water pump type — choose a £150 hand water pump, £1,800 solar water pump, or contribute from £25 towards a solar installation.

    2

Add a dedication — optionally dedicate the water pump as sadaqah jariyah for a named individual.

    3

HNCO assigns a location — the water pump is allocated to a community with the highest need.

    4

Installation begins — HNCO volunteers and local partners construct the water pump on site.

    5

Completion report issued — donors receive photographs and confirmation of the beneficiary community. Hand pumps are typically completed within 2-3 weeks and solar pumps within 2-3 months.

Clean water flowing from completed water pump

Every penny donated towards a water pump goes directly to the construction and installation of the water supply. HNCO is a UK-registered non-profit organisation operating under full transparency and accountability. Donation records, fund allocation, and project reporting are available through HNCO's published accounts, and all water pump projects are tracked from payment to completion.

    Water Pump Donation Options

HNCO offers water pump donations at 3 price points, each designed for a different scale of community impact.

    Manual hand water pump installation

    Manual Hand Water Pump

    £150

A manual hand water pump draws clean water from approximately 30 metres underground. Each hand water pump serves up to 4 families with water for drinking, cooking, and washing. Hand water pumps are designed to last a minimum of 10 years and require only basic maintenance that the beneficiary community can manage independently. HNCO installs hand water pumps in clusters between houses, making them safe and accessible for daily use.

Donors receive a personalised completion report with photographs of their sponsored hand water pump within 2-3 weeks of installation.

    Solar water pump installation ceremony
    Most Impact

    Solar Water Pump

    £1,800

A solar-powered water pump serves approximately 100 people through up to 8 taps, powered entirely by solar panels. Solar water pumps are built in communal locations — village centres, schools, and mosques — and are engineered to last at least 20 years. The solar water pump eliminates the physical effort of manual pumping and provides a higher volume of clean water to larger communities.

    Community gathering around water point

Contribute Towards a Solar Water Pump

    From £25

Donors who wish to contribute towards a larger water pump project can give from £25. Multiple contributions are pooled to fund a single solar water pump installation, allowing every donor to share in the reward of providing clean water to an entire community.

Not sure which water pump type suits your donation? The hand pump vs solar water pump comparison breaks down the differences in cost, capacity, lifespan, and community impact.

Beyond the practical impact, each water pump donation carries spiritual significance rooted in Islamic charitable tradition.

A water pump donation is one of the most effective forms of sadaqah jariyah available to Muslim donors. Sadaqah jariyah refers to an act of charity whose benefit continues over time, generating ongoing spiritual reward for the donor. Because a hand water pump provides clean water for a minimum of 10 years, and a solar water pump for over 20 years, the charitable benefit extends far beyond the moment of giving.

Water pump sadaqah is particularly valued during sacred periods such as Muharram, Ramadan, and Dhul Hijjah. Many donors choose to dedicate a water pump in the name of a deceased loved one, ensuring the reward reaches them in the hereafter. HNCO allows donors to add a dedication name of up to 25 characters to the plaque on their water pump.

Donors may also direct zakat funds towards water projects where eligible, depending on the specific circumstances of the beneficiary community.

    Where HNCO Builds Water Pumps

HNCO installs water pumps in 4 primary regions: Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Water pump locations are selected based on the severity of water scarcity and the absence of existing infrastructure.

    Water Pump Donation Pakistan

Pakistan is HNCO's largest water pump installation region. HNCO volunteers work directly in some of the country's most remote and impoverished villages, where residents have never had access to a fresh water supply. Hundreds of hand water pumps have already been installed across rural Pakistan through donor-funded projects. Solar water pump installations in Pakistan serve larger communities, often in areas where grid electricity is unavailable.

Manual hand water pump in Africa and Southeast Asia

Water Pumps in Africa and Southeast Asia

HNCO extends water pump installations to communities across Africa, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Each location is assessed for ground water depth, population density, and existing water access before a water pump type is selected. Hand pumps are typically completed within 2-3 weeks and solar pumps within 2-3 months of donation.

Once a location is confirmed, the water pump donation moves through a structured installation process.

Donating a water pump funds a long-term water source, not a short-term fix. A manual hand water pump is built to last a minimum of 10 years. A solar water pump is engineered for at least 20 years of service.

HNCO trains beneficiary communities to carry out routine hand pump maintenance independently. Manual hand water pumps are designed for low-cost upkeep using locally available parts. Solar water pumps require less frequent maintenance due to fewer moving components, though solar panel cleaning and electrical checks are part of the long-term care plan.

If a water pump develops a fault within its expected lifespan, the beneficiary community contacts HNCO's local partners for support. HNCO does not charge beneficiaries for repairs covered under the original installation scope.

Water Pump Impact: What Your Donation Changes

Donating a water pump creates measurable change across 4 areas of community life.

    Community accessing clean water

    Health

access to clean drinking water reduces the incidence of waterborne diseases including cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Communities with water pumps report fewer medical emergencies and lower healthcare costs.

    Children benefiting from school attendance

    Education

children who previously spent hours collecting water are free to attend school. Girls, who disproportionately carry the burden of water collection, benefit most from a nearby water pump.

Community members using water pump for farming and livelihoods

    Livelihoods

adults who no longer need to travel for water can dedicate time to farming, trade, and employment. Water pumps also support food security by providing irrigation for crops and livestock.

    Children using water pump taps

    Dignity

a local water supply enables basic hygiene, sanitation, and cleanliness. Families can wash, cook, and maintain their homes without rationing a scarce resource.

Islamic Basis for Water Pump Charity

Islam elevates water provision above other forms of voluntary charity, making water pump donations one of the most spiritually rewarded acts a Muslim can undertake. The prophetic traditions emphasise water as the highest form of sadaqah, and the Quran identifies water as the origin of all life.

HNCO's water pump programme was personally launched in 2010 by Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (may Allah sanctify his secret), and HNCO continues this legacy as a core part of its mission.

Water pump donations can be given as sadaqah (voluntary charity), sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity), or dedicated in memory of the deceased. During Ramadan and other blessed periods, the reward for charitable acts is multiplied, making water pump donations particularly impactful during these times.
