Donate a Water Pump in Someone's Name — Memorial and Honour Dedications
HNCO allows donors to dedicate a water pump in honour of a living person or in memory of someone who has passed away. Every dedicated water pump receives a plaque bearing the chosen name (up to 25 characters), installed on the pump structure at the beneficiary site. Dedications are available on both the £150 hand water pump and the £1,800 solar water pump. Donors receive a completion report with photographs showing the installed plaque, pump location, and beneficiary community.
How Water Pump Dedications Work
Dedicating a water pump adds a personalised element to the donation without changing the cost, process, or installation timeline. The dedication is specified at the point of donation and applies to one of 3 categories:
In honour of
The water pump is dedicated to a living person, such as a parent, spouse, child, or friend. This option is commonly chosen for birthdays, wedding gifts, anniversaries, graduations, and other occasions.
In memory of
The water pump is dedicated to someone who has passed away. The donor's intention is that the ongoing benefit of the water pump generates spiritual reward for the deceased person.
Sadaqah jariyah for
The water pump is explicitly dedicated as sadaqah jariyah on behalf of a named individual. This framing is most commonly used for deceased parents and carries particular significance in the Islamic tradition of ongoing charity.
In all 3 cases, the dedication name (up to 25 characters) is engraved on a plaque affixed to the water pump. The donor's own name does not appear on the plaque unless specifically requested.
Water Pump Dedication Plaque
Each dedicated water pump includes a physical plaque installed on the pump structure at the beneficiary site. The plaque displays the dedication name and the type of dedication (in honour of, in memory of, or sadaqah jariyah for).
Plaque constraints:
- Maximum 25 characters including spaces
- Available on both hand water pumps and solar water pumps
- Installed at the point of pump completion
The 25-character limit means donors should plan the plaque text in advance. Examples of plaque text that fit within the limit: "Sadaqah for Amina Khan" (22 characters), "In memory of Dad" (16 characters), "For Yusuf Ali" (13 characters).
Names exceeding 25 characters will be shortened by HNCO. Donors who require guidance on plaque text can contact HNCO before completing their donation.
Water Pump as a Gift
A water pump donation makes a meaningful alternative gift for occasions where a physical present is not needed or desired. Common occasions for water pump gift donations include:
Weddings
A water pump wedding gift provides clean water to families in need whilst honouring the couple. The plaque can bear both names.
Birthdays
Particularly for milestone birthdays (40th, 50th, 60th) where the recipient values charity over material gifts.
Eid
A water pump donated during Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha combines the festive spirit of giving with the prophetic emphasis on water as the best charity.
Graduations, new births, and anniversaries
Any occasion where the donor wishes to mark a milestone with lasting charitable impact.
The donor receives the completion report and can share it with the honoured person as proof of the gift. The report includes photographs of the installed pump and beneficiary details.
Water Pump Memorial Donations
Donating a water pump in memory of a deceased person is one of the most spiritually impactful uses of a water pump donation. The Islamic tradition holds that the reward of ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah) can reach a person who has passed away when the donation is given on their behalf.
A water pump memorial creates a physical, lasting source of benefit in the name of the deceased. Unlike a one-off charitable gift, a water pump provides clean water for 10 to 20 years, generating continuous reward throughout its operational life.
The most common memorial water pump dedications are for deceased parents. Children who wish to continue benefiting their mother or father after death frequently choose a water pump as their preferred form of sadaqah jariyah for parents. The hadith on water as the best charity adds further weight to this choice.
How to Donate a Water Pump in Someone's Name
The donation process for a dedicated water pump follows the same steps as a standard water pump donation, with one additional field.
- Select a water pump type — £150 hand water pump or £1,800 solar water pump. Contributions from £25 towards a pooled solar pump can also be dedicated.
- Choose a dedication type — in honour of, in memory of, or sadaqah jariyah for.
- Enter the dedication name — up to 25 characters. This name will appear on the pump plaque.
- Complete payment — online, by phone (+44 1282 501 998), or by bank transfer.
- Receive the completion report — photographs and an image of the installed plaque.
Dedicated water pumps are allocated to communities in Pakistan, Africa, Indonesia, and Malaysia using the same needs-based process as all HNCO water pump installations. The dedication does not affect which community receives the pump.
