Water Pump Sadaqah — The Best Form of Charity

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The best charity is giving water to drink" (Ahmad). A water pump donation combines sadaqah with sadaqah jariyah — ongoing charity that continues to earn reward for as long as the pump provides clean water. HNCO offers water pump sadaqah from £150 for a hand pump or £1,800 for a solar pump.

    What is Sadaqah?

Sadaqah is voluntary charity given for the sake of Allah, with no expectation of return. Unlike zakat, which is obligatory, sadaqah is given freely and can be given at any time, in any amount, to any cause that benefits others.

The Quran encourages sadaqah in numerous verses: "Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah and then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders or injury will have their reward with their Lord" (2:262). Sadaqah purifies wealth, protects from calamity, and brings the giver closer to Allah.

Why Water is the Best Sadaqah

Among all forms of sadaqah, water holds a special place in Islamic tradition. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked: "Which charity is best?" He replied: "Water" (Abu Dawud). This hadith establishes water as the most virtuous form of charitable giving.

"Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died. What is the best charity I can give on her behalf?' He said: 'Water.' So Sa'd dug a well and said: 'This is for Umm Sa'd.'"

    — Sunan Abu Dawud

This hadith demonstrates that water sadaqah can be given on behalf of deceased parents and loved ones. Many donors choose to dedicate a water pump in someone's name as the most beneficial form of ongoing charity for the departed.

    Sadaqah vs Sadaqah Jariyah

While all sadaqah earns reward, sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity) continues to earn reward for as long as the benefit continues. A water pump is one of the purest forms of sadaqah jariyah because:

    • A hand water pump provides clean water for 10+ years
    • A solar water pump serves communities for 20+ years
    • Every person who drinks, cooks, washes, or benefits from the water generates reward for the donor
    • The reward continues even after the donor has passed away

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them" (Muslim).

When to Give Water Pump Sadaqah

Sadaqah can be given at any time, but certain occasions carry multiplied reward:

    Ramadan

Charity given during Ramadan is multiplied many times over. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was "more generous than the blowing wind" during this blessed month.

    Dhul Hijjah

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are among the most virtuous for good deeds, including sadaqah. Giving during these days earns immense reward.

    Muharram

Muharram is a sacred month. Water charity during this time carries historical significance, recalling the tragedy of Karbala.

    Friday

Sadaqah given on Friday (Jumu'ah) is considered especially blessed. Many donors set up regular giving to coincide with this day.
